News: Omega triumphs with Seamaster anniversary launches

Omega has marked the 75th anniversary of its famed Seamaster collection with not one but seven new launches, including Planet Ocean, Ultra Deep, Ploprof and Aqua Terra versions.

Intriguingly, each watch comes in a gradient “Summer Blue” dial which is either a light or dark shade depending on the watch’s water-resistance. For example, the Aqua Terra - water-resistant to 150 metres - features a dial far lighter in tone than the 6,000m water-resistant Ultra Deep, whose dial is a midnight blue at the edges.

All seven watches feature a caseback engraved with a detailed Poseidon motif.

As for the mighty Ploprof, which we’re focusing on here, this also has serious dive specs, which isn’t surprising for a watch whose very name is a contraction of “plongeur professionnel” - French for “professional diver”.

With a water resistance of 1,200 metres, helium escape valve, lockable rotating bezel (you can only move it by pressing the protruding button on the right) and a hefty monobloc case that gives it more wrist presence than a pair of police-issue handcuffs, it’s not for the discreet. But this is a watch that’s big because it needs to be, not because it can be?and for that it’ll always get the admiration of true watch aficionados.

The Ploprof joined the Seamaster collection in 1970 and has drifted in and out of popularity since then, even going out of production between 1979 and 2009. Right now, though, it’s enjoying a resurgence and this new iteration, which retains its distinctly 70s vibe, will delight a new generation of admirers.
