News: Rolex Cosmograph Daytona 116508 and 116503
So far, 2016 has been an exciting year for devotees of the much-loved Daytona. Not only did Rolex unveil the long-awaited 116500LN steel model with a black ceramic bezel last month, but the luxury brand has also released new bi-metal and all-gold versions of this classic chronograph for us all to delight in.
Despite the Daytona having originally been developed as a sports watch for professional drivers, precious metal versions have nevertheless always proved popular—and you can see exactly why with the 116508. Like its predecessor, the 116528, this piece features a resplendent 18k gold case and bracelet, but it has been given a handsome new racing green dial; a perfect homage not only to the model’s motorsport heritage, but also to Rolex’s new green seal. The seal is not only proof that the watch meets the brand’s standards to be certified as a Superlative Chronometer, but gives Rolex owners a new, longer warranty of five years.
Similarly, the bi-metal 116523 has been given a make-over for 2016 in the form of the 116503. With a dial available in classic white or iridescent mother-of-pearl, indices are picked out either in gold or, for that extra touch of prestige, diamond. The Oyster bracelet is crafted in Rolex’s patented Rolesor—a combination of steel and gold, making use of the best properties from both metals at the same time.
Both of the new editions feature an updated bezel similar to that of the 116500LN—although this time in 18k yellow gold, instead of black ceramic. The tachymeter scale of the chronograph now has a slightly different layout, with the markings following the curve of the bezel radially. The numbers 60 to 100 on the left-hand side of the scale are also now subtly connected with a delicate black semi-circular line, adding an extra sense of definition to the bezel. At 40mm in diameter, the 116503 and 116508 are typically sized for the Daytona and offer the comfortable fit that collectors of the model have come to expect—perfect for wear both on the road and off of it.
