News: The Best-Looking Royal Oak Yet? – The Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Jumbo Extra-Thin Platinum With Smoked Green Dial
Another year means another batch of new watches. For Audemars Piguet, 2021 has meant upgrades and variations to its Royal Oak and CODE 11:59 ranges. To kick things off, I thought I would talk about the new Royal Oak Jumbo Extra-Thin Platinum and its smoked green dial—which might be my new favourite Royal Oak.
This Royal Oak is, yes, you guessed it: platinum—950 platinum if you want to be exact. 950 platinum is 95% pure and makes the 39mm case and accompanying integrated bracelet of the Jumbo Extra-Thin feel substantial and luxurious thanks to the weight it adds—the watch weighs over 250 grams, not heavy, but definitely enough for you to feel a difference.
In terms of looks, not much has changed—but then again, why would you change an icon? It has the octagonal bezel with contrasting in finish and white gold screws, the integrated bracelet, the brushed case with the crown bulging out of it at three—it even has the applied AP logo borrowed from some vintage and Jumbo Extra-Thin Royal Oak models.
However, what has changed is the dial. The dial isn’t tapisserie—like you would expect from a Royal Oak—instead, this is a gradient smoked green. The way it moves from a rich green inner—playing and transitioning with the light—to the seemingly deep black found towards the end of the white gold baton hour markers is stunning and is not done justice in photos. Audemars Piguet knows how good this dial looks. It has even matched the date to the colour of the dial to minimise distractions.
Inside the Jumbo Extra-Thin Platinum is the 3.05mm thick Calibre 2121—which is visible through a sapphire case back. The automatic calibre runs at 19,800 vph, has a 40-hour power reserve, has 36 jewels and a 21k gold skeletonised rotor-weight for good measure.
Set your Instagram sliders to 100%, because this watch is a beauty. It’s compact—at 39mm x 8.1mm—it’s made from luxurious platinum, and that dial, that damned dial—is this the best-looking Royal Oak yet? I will leave that for you to decide.
