Feature: The Best Summer Watch – The Diner

Welcome back to “The Best Summer Watch” mini-series—where we take a closer look at the best watch suited for a specific personality. Last time around, we looked at “The Lounger”, aka the sort of person that likes to relax in their much-earned downtime—and if you haven’t read that article, click here. This time, however, we are going to be taking a look at “The Diner”.

The diner is a person that likes to eat. Not in the way that they’ve had one too many pies but the type of person that when they get some free time, likes to spend it—as well as their hard-earned cash—eating extravagantly in restaurants. The watch I’d recommend the diner? The Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso Classic Monoface Small Seconds.

So, why would I recommend the Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso Classic Monoface Small Seconds? Well, first off, the Reverso is an incredibly versatile watch in terms of style. Dress it up, down, sideways; it suits any occasion from a beach-side restaurant to the Savoy.

Next up are a few practical uses, well, sort of—and they utilize the Reverso’s key feature: a flippable dial. The Reverso was first created as a watch for polo players—you know, the sport that’s essentially posh hockey on a horse. Polo players would flip the Reverso to keep the traditional dial side from being smashed to smithereens during play—most likely by an opponent’s ball.

But what’s that got to do with the diner? Well, when the diner has had one too many, depth proception—as well as other senses—are hindered, meaning a chance meeting with a door frame or table increases in probability. The diner, therefore, will be able to flip the dial—just like the Polo players did—to protect their beloved watch.

Another reason I chose the Monoface Small Seconds and not a tribute or dual face is for the reflective, plain steel face. Because not only—as I mentioned—will it help to protect the watch, but it also allows the diner to check their teeth for any, well, leftovers.

I think the diner will be pretty chuffed with this tiny dinner companion. The Reverso is a watch from one of the most respected luxury watchmakers in all of watchmaking, one that has an unmatched versatility—being both a dress and sports watch—and most importantly for the diner, it’s a watch that has your back. Oh, and did I mention that you can pick one up for around £4,500 pre-owned? Who said you can’t have your cake and eat it? Pun intended.
