Rolex Explorer 1655
The development of the Rolex Explorer came in succession to the oyster perpetual watch worn on the first ascent of Everest by Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay. By furnishing the Explorer with larger hands and a 24hour bezel, Rolex increased their visibility and legibility of the timepiece, aiding the vision of those intrepid enough to put the watch to the test. The watch was developed for spelunkers and speleologists and people who would spend large amount of time without natural light to indicated day or night. ‘Il freccione’ or ‘the big arrow’ as it became known, featured a larger orange GMT hand. Due to age, the hand on this 1655 has faded, leaving it almost completely white. This phenomenon has led to similar examples being named ‘albino’ by collectors.
Due to age, this Rolex may not fall within our typical expected tolerances for timekeeping, and is no longer suitable for use in wet environments or submersion in water. In the interests of preserving original features, utmost care has been taken to sympathetically restore this watch. It has also been referenced against technical documents and manufacturer records where available to ensure authenticity and a clean history.
