News: Christopher Ward C9 D-Type

The 24 Hours of Le Mans is just as well known for its demanding circuit as it is for the myriad of high-performance cars that have competed in it since the race began in 1923. One such car was the Jaguar D-Type, which was produced between 1954 and 1957. During that period, it would go on to win three Le Mans races, thanks in part to its revolutionary design.

Jaguar utilised elements of aeronautical technology for the construction of a monocoque tub, which improved the performance of the car. It was a classic vintage racer, with a sleek, streamlines design—and has developed a devoted following among car enthusiasts.

In honour of this iconic vehicle, Christopher Ward has developed a limited edition watch that features metal from the piston from one of the original race cars. The metal has been laser-cut to faithfully depict the shape of the D-Type’s wheel alloys, and can be seen through the exhibition caseback.

The design of the watch is also heavily influenced by the car, with the dial purposefully reminiscent of the D-Type's speedometer and the 12 o’clock numeral encircled by a white disc, similar to the numbers painted on the cars that drove the Le Mans circuit. Above 6 o’clock, there’s also a neat power reserve that looks like a fuel tank indicator on a car’s dashboard.

The 43mm polished steel case is classically styled, with a thin bezel and elegant lugs, joining the watch to a black strap with complementary white stitching. The watch is powered by ETA’s Valgranges A07.161 self-winding movement, and is limited to just 55 pieces—in reference to the first time the D-Type took the lead at Le Mans in 1955.
