Steve McQueen may have made the Heuer Monaco famous during the filming of Le Mans, but the watch he chose to wear in his own time was the seldom-seen Rolex Explorer II 1655 ‘Orange Hand.’ Along with the striking 24-hour hand that gives the watch its nickname, the dial and bezel are also features that are unique to the model. The 1655 was not a particularly successful watch in its day, but is now highly desirable thanks to its low production numbers and one-of-a-kind design. The concept behind the model was to give speleologists a reference for night and day when working in the dark confines of a cave system.

Due to age, this Rolex may not fall within our typical expected tolerances for timekeeping, and is no longer suitable for use in wet environments or submersion in water. In the interests of preserving original features, utmost care has been taken to sympathetically restore this watch. It has also been referenced against technical documents and manufacturer records where available to ensure authenticity and a clean history.

This is a pre-owned Rolex Explorer 1655. It has a 40mm Steel case, a Black Baton dial, a Steel (Oyster) bracelet, and is powered by an Automatic movement. The case has a 5722xxx serial and paperwork is dated 31 March 1977, making it 39 years old, and comes complete with box. It also comes with a 12 month limited Watchfinder warranty.
