Patek Philippe Nautilus 5712/GR
As a special edition of the Patek Philippe Nautilus, the 5712GR combines rose gold with white gold for a run rumoured to be just fifty pieces. As one of the famous few 1970’s watches designed by the late Gérald Genta, the Nautilus remains the one most faithful to its original design, and its striking appearance has earned it many admirers.
The most unique feature of the Nautilus range is its distinctive bezel design, which uses two ‘ears’ on either side of the case to fix it down; much like the hinges on a porthole from which the inspiration for it was derived. The interlocking ears are screwed down to give the standard Nautilus its water resistance (which is sacrificed in the 5712 range because of the quickset buttons).
The 5712 range moves the Nautilus design forward by adding a few complications to the dial; power reserve and moonphase. The centre seconds are relegated to a sub-dial, and the date to a sub-dial that surrounds the added moonphase indicator. In order to add these complications without dramatically increasing the slender proportions of the case, Patek Philippe engineers developed the Caliber 240 PS IRM C LU to be 3.98mm thick, including the automatic winding rotor.
This was achieved by miniaturising the rotor and setting it off centre, allowing it to be embedded into the movement itself rather than sitting astride it. To counter its size, the rotor is made from solid 22 carat gold to give it the mass required to spin freely and keep the mainspring wound.
This special edition 5712GR was made specifically for the Asian market and, as with all the gold Nautilus models, it comes with a leather strap that matches the colour of the dial, which is decorated with the traditional Nautilus stripes that the model has had since the first.
