Patek Philippe Complicated 5070G
When the first 5070 was launched in 1998, it was considered to be quite a large piece at 42mm in diameter, but times have since changed. What the 5070 offers today is a classic piece in a contemporary size; not as small as others of its genre, but not so big as to become clumsy.
This white gold version (indicated by the G at the end of 5070G) was later launched in 2003 along with the yellow gold version (the 5070J), and introduced the silver dial to the range. Mixed with the black dial printing, hands and applied numerals, the silver dial is highly contrasting and thus easy to read. This is what gives this piece its distinctive classical appearance, similar to early chronographs of the 1940’s, particularly the Lemania’s, which coincidentally, the movement is based on.
The CH 27-70 movement is one of the most striking features of this watch, and although it is based on a Lemania 2310, it is virtually unrecognisable as one thanks to the painstaking and extensive work done to it – put the Patek and the Lemania movements side by side and it is virtually impossible to spot any identical parts thanks to the component replacement and refinishing done by Patek Philippe.
The finish of any Patek is its crowning jewel, and rather than being adorned with pointless trinkets, the 5070G is just beautifully and simply designed and exquisitely finished. The stepped case frames the small dial to balance the seconds and tachymetre track, and the step is also found on the lugs and the case back. The delicate leaf hands are clear but not intrusive, thanks to the delicate sculpting from base to tip.
This is the kind of watch that either speaks to you or it doesn’t, but for those for whom it does, it is simply a watch that must be owned and enjoyed for a lifetime.
