Jaeger Le Coultre Master Control 146.8.32.S.936
The Jaeger-LeCoultre Master World Geographic is an example of some of the finest watchmaking in the world from one of the most capable manufacturers in the world, using expertise founded by the minds of two pioneering watchmakers.
Both Antoine Le-Coultre and Edmond Jaeger were fascinated by the art of producing ground-breaking and technically complex movements, including movements that were the world’s smallest, thinnest and most complex. When Anoine’s grandson Elie LeCoultre and Edmond Jaeger became friends and partners in 1903 (started by a watchmaking challenge from one to the other) that laid the foundations for the understated, yet highly capable brand we see today.
As proof of the continuing expertise of the Vallée de Joux-based manufacturer, the Master World Geographic carries no less than eight complications, all controlled by just two crowns and a hidden pusher. It only takes a few seconds of using the controls to realise that it is built as good as it looks. Turning the upper crown, which changes the timezone, feels solid and well damped, and the discs that slide round snap into place with a reassuring click.
The quality stands up even at close scrutiny – the central hands, for example, are polished on one side and bead-blasted on the other to give maximum legibility, and the hour markers are re-shaped rather than cut to fit around the sub dials.
This particular Master World Geographic is even more special because of its rare nature. One of only a handful of limited edition boutique pieces, it replaces the standard silver and blue dial with a graphite grey and deep red. An exact number of pieces isn’t known, but rumours of thirty or less have been considered, and additional pieces are extremely hard to come by. This piece has it all, style, complexity and rarity, and is not a chance to be missed.
