Breitling founded their reputation in the Jura Mountains of Switzerland by specialising in precision instruments and chronographs for use by scientists and engineers. Under the watchful eye of Leon Breitling, the company rapidly expanded, its expertise driving the business forwards at a tremendous rate.
You may begin to think that Breitling, after closing down during the quartz revolution of the 1970’s, have lost their way when it comes to truly complex and innovative pieces, that the allure of marketing has overwhelmed the need to make watches that stand up to the company’s rich heritage, but that’s not the case, as the Montbrillant Olympus ably demonstrates.
Equipped with a four-year calendar (which tracks the leap year changes for four years before requiring a reset), a chronograph and a moonphase, the Montbrillant Olympus isn’t short of complications in its Cal. 19 movement. Named after the La Chaux-de-Fonds street into which the company moved to in 1892, its feature-packed rose gold case is adorned with little details that highlight moments in the brand’s past.
The biggest of these details is the engraving of the La Chaux-de-Fonds factory on the caseback, but there are smaller, more subtle details too. The ‘beads of rice’ bezel, for example, pays homage to the first Navitimers of the 1950’s, and the word ‘Breitling’ is written in the traditional script. The dial is also typical Breitling, with many carefully considered scales laid out over it, each one relating to one of the many functions the watch is able to perform.
This rose gold Montbrillant Olympus is one of just 250 pieces and is a superb addition to any serious collection, as well as a fine example of the fabulous watchmaking that Breitling still produce.
